Witnessing Ground Zero
When I was in college I visited NYC several times, many times walking right past the World Trade Centers. This was my first time back to New York since 9/11. The site is now surrounded by a huge fence and along the east side of it are signs about the site and a timeline recounting the events on 9/11. There were a lot of people there quietly reading the signs and paying their respects. The silence was broken a native shouting, "If you had been here that day you would understand that it's not a tourist attraction!" No, it's not a tourist attraction, it's a historical site. We saw the events unfold on television and now we've come to witness the site with our own eyes and reflect.
