R.I.P. Drive 105
by nate

The Twin Cities has an aweful record for keeping alternative rock stations on the air. Today I noticed that the latest one, Drive 105, is now off the air. It was replaced by Love 105. GAG! I guess I'll have to wait another six months for it to be replaced with another alternative rock station.

Update: There is a petition online to get Drive 105 back. Please go sign it.

Just get Sirius and you're all set.

I really only listen to the radio when I'm in the car. I don't think it's worth a monthly subscription for something I would barely use.

Amanda said on May 10 at 10:39 a.m.:

That was my favorite station! I listened to it everytime I was in the car and when I heard Love105 instead I freaked out. It's horrible! I couldn't even listen to that crap.

Totally dissapointed

Best radio station in Minnesota is now gone. WHY!!!!?

Helmut said on May 10 at 01:24 p.m.:

Yuk!! Stale old love songs

Mister Whirly said on May 10 at 01:35 p.m.:

Correction

Actually the latest one is 89.3 the Current, which I'm guessing is the reason 105 switched formats. They were always getting beat in the Arbirton ratings by them.

Rev 105 was the best alt music station the Twin Cities ever had...

michael said on May 10 at 01:43 p.m.:

Thanks ABC, Clear Channel and CBS - for the innovative programming.

ericthebikeman said on May 10 at 02:37 p.m.:

I turned it on today only to have disco playing. Did I miss something? Everyone still hated disco last I heard and 70s clothes made their short lived comeback years ago.

StarTrib said it is supposed to compete with "hip" music from the current. Hip?!? uh try again, their ratings are in the tank as well. MPR should stick which what it knows, news and classical music. ABC should fire whoever studied their demographics post haste and stop emulating failing formats from thankfully dead eras.

Hi from Tulsa

This totally sucks I listened to Drive 105 online here at work in Tulsa, OK. I went to drive105.com and this LOVE 105 shit was playing... My sympathy to listeners in the MSP metro

Jane Doe said on May 10 at 03:46 p.m.:

WHAT the deuce!!

Drive was my favorite radio station!! Litterally this love station is GAY!! WE SHOULDN'T HAVE TO PAY TO LISTEN TO GOOD MUSIC!!!

Loki said on May 10 at 10:29 p.m.:

Looks like we're not the only ones upset, as I see it's all over Google now. (which is how I found your entry, btw) -- here's to hoping for another Alternative go-around!

Stephan said on May 13 at 06:20 p.m.:

Nothing wrong with the Current

The Current is not run by the traditional MPR people. The program director is Steve Nelson, formerly of Rev 105 (yes that was the best alt station in the cities). For on-air talent they have both Maria Lucia and Thorn; also of Rev 105 and Mark Wheat who used to be in charge of 770 Radio K, the college station. The Current is a tremendous station, the music selection is fantastic and so much more diverse and deeper than Drive 105's was. I will miss Drive, it was a great station, but the cities is NOT underserved. Oh...And I will not miss JP the Radio Slave...

Cheers, and raise a glass for those who have fallen (or radio stations).

What the hell where you thinking?!

What is going on here? Are we just going have to be spooned fed by A.B.C. ? We need the Drive 105, because just the simple fact is they're is not enough alternative stations on standard F.M. All we got now is bunch of country, pop, and corporate hard core/ and or rock staions. Personally standard american music tastes have gone down the toilet, and that is a fact. So thanks A.B.C for stinking of stupid, and keep up with same crapy music standards that you have been doing for years, THANKS FOR NOTHING!

What the #%$@!&^

I was pretty upset when I turned to my all-time favorite radio station and it was REPLACED with horrible Love songs!! They didn't even notify listeners -- one day it was there, the next day it was gone!! I know they have a short playlist of songs, but I loved them -- all of them and now I am left with a horrible radio station which is good for nothing. Honestly, I rather listen to classical music, at least I know they're not disappearing anytime soon.

ang said on May 15 at 02:39 p.m.:

there is 89.3 the current but they don't always play alternative, if you get lucky you might hear something good but sometimes it's all shit anyways. Come back drive 105!

Katie said on May 15 at 10:16 p.m.:

kinda freaking out here..

i need my drive 105. and i know i'm not alone in this matter! yea, the whole "not warning their fans" thing was a bitch. it was a really bad day for me anyway, and then i go to bed listening to drive 105, and heard 93X. That was confusing, but i figured it was a fluke.. but oh no.. the next morning i wake up to lame as hell "love 105.. tell your friends about us, spread the love" .. AAAHH!! okay. so i'm definitely not okay with this. i don't care WHAT the problem was, there are some devoted fans to alternative music that simply need drive 105 back. i should write a petition. plz email me if you'd sign it.. if i get enough emails, i'll start one up.

nate said on May 16 at 09:34 a.m.:

I've seen a lot of people suggest listening to the Current in place of Drive 105. I replaced 105.1 with 89.3 on my car radio presets. It's just not the same.

The way I see it there are two different groups that claim to listen to "alternative music." There is the group that wants something between hard rock and pop music. Then there is the group that wants something which most people haven't heard of. Drive 105 satisfied the first, the Current satisfies the second. I am certainly not in the second group.

Lisa said on May 16 at 11:22 a.m.:

Nate - you hit it dead-on. I tried doing the Current thing when they first came on air and felt stupid that I just didn't get it. I almost felt non-alternative even. I questioned my being and thought I was going to have to hang up my alternative boots and lock in 97.1. Yikes! Anyway, Stephan, I DO miss J.P. the Radio Slave. Where is he in this time of need???

mike said on May 18 at 01:27 a.m.:

I cant believe this

The only radio station I could get G love, the killers, oasis, o.a.r, snow patrol, and so many more on a consistant basis is gone!?!? Love 105 is a joke of a replacement. If their worried about getting beat by ratings, how the hell does it make sense to come out with a format thats just like so many others already. Bring back Drive 105 and make everything right again.

JB said on May 18 at 10:09 a.m.:

Music Freak

For the most part the radio blows. Drive was a great station, but it was annoying to try and tune into 3 stations to find the best reception. Lame! Plus, they had a limited selection. If they would open their format to include more deep cuts from the artists they played and have a better variety of bands (i.e. Widespread Panic, John Butler Trio, Grateful Dead, The Radiators, Led Zepplin, and even local bands....Root City, Atmosphere, Like Hell, and The New Primitives to name a few) probably would have brought in a wider variety of listeners. Come on!!! You were supposed to be alternative....I would think anything goes at that point. Whatever, their limited format along with having to find a good reception from 3 stations is what brought them to their demise.

mitch said on May 27 at 01:21 a.m.:

why

I was driving and I heard meat loaf's two out of three aint bad on...I was like "never hear this on drive" then it said love 105 and I was like WTF is this

Billy said on May 30 at 03:53 a.m.:

93x isn't going anywere

Guys, 93x isn't going to change formats because its a top 5 station in the Twin Cities Market. It actually dose better in the ratings now then KDWB, of course Cities 97 now does better ratings then KDWB. Why did Drive 105 go away? The same reason Rev 105 and Zone 105 and any other format i the Twin Cities with the numbers 105 will go away. 3 Frequency's that barely total 10k in total. And WHy cry about it Radio will be dead in 5 years anyways.

:(

I lived in the cities for a couple years and only listened to drive. About a year ago, I moved to Fargo (which, it is worth mentioning, has absolutely NOTHING but crap on the radio), and I was driving through the cities today, all pumped to hear drive...I almost drove my car off 94...it's so refreshing to see how generic everyone is becoming, isn't it?

RH said on Jun 15 at 03:14 a.m.:

Sad day

I know most companies have to swim or sink in three years that's the time frame before all the money is sucked out. But it was backed by Disney, so that shouldn't have been an issue. It was growing in popularity everytime I turned around. It just needed more than 3 years to prove itself worthy. I always came home and listened to it. It is also the only company I know where I would listen to a song on the radio, go on line, look up the title and artist, then could listen to it again if I wanted to. I miss my favorite station.

jp-

you're a moron. you act half your age and you repeat the same jokes over and over. if alternative music comes back to the cities, just stay where you're at over there at 93x.

thanks,

Drive 105 wouldn't be able to compete with the taxpayer subsidized hipster station, the current. Too bad.
